Peloton Issues Voluntary Pedal Recall for Cycling Bike and Safety Warning for Peloton Treadmill Following Injuries and Child Death
Peloton issued a safety warning for its Tread+ treadmill. Following a report of a child’s death, the company in March 2021 advised owners to remove the safety key from the treadmill and store it where it can’t be reached by children. In its statement, Peloton revealed they were aware of “a small number” of other injuries to children involving Tread+ products.
One such injury involved a three-year-old boy who was found trapped under a Tread+ in February 2021. The boy was found with no pulse and not breathing. Although he survived, he suffered a significant brain injury and injuries to the face and neck. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission is currently investigating the fatal accident.
In October 2020, CPSC issued a recall of Peloton pedals on the company’s indoor cycling bikes after finding some of the pedals could break unexpectedly while in use. Following this recall, which affected 27,000 bike pedals, Peloton offered free pedal replacements to affected customers.
There were 120 reports of the PR70P clip-in pedals breaking during use. The defective Peloton pedals that were sold between July 2013 and May 2016, resulted in 16 reports of leg injuries. Five people required medical treatment for their injuries. According to the CPSC, there were 22,500 treadmill-related injuries in 2019 and 2,000 of these injuries involved children under 8. There were also 17 deaths linked to treadmills reported between 2018 and 2020.
While no lawsuits have been filed against Peloton for the recalled pedals or injuries related to its treadmills, Peloton may be susceptible to product liability claims. Peloton may be found liable for injuries related to its recalled pedals if it can be shown they had manufacturing or design defects.
